Dixon, Godrich & W. Rye: "Name and repertoire alike suggest a connection with Coley Jones, but no supporting evidence is available".

Bob Eagle @ facebook (06/29/2019): "I agree that Coley Dotson's song titles are reminiscent of Coley Jones' songs, but there was indeed a Colley (sic) Dotson (38) at La Grange, TX in 1920, who was female. Could be coincidence , but maybe not."

1) Howard Rye @ facebook (May 2014): "This is a version of Child Ballad 274, Our Goodman, as presumably is the Irish song 'Seven Drunker Nights'. It seems to have been well established in African American tradition. Other versions include Sylvester and Lena Kimbrough on Meritt 2201 (Cabbage Head Blues), Jo Jo Adams on Aristocrat 803 (Cabbage Head), Chris Powell on Columbia 30162 (Last Saturday Night), Frankie Ervin on Modern (Saturday Night on Ace CDCH1148), and most famously Sonny Boy Williamson's Checker 894 (Wake Up Baby). According to Paul Oliver Blind Lemon's unissued 'Laboring Man Away from Home' is also a version. No doubt there are others."
